D’you suppose they’re going to be fashionable again? or, I guess, for the first time?

Google’s efforts to get into the newspaper ad business have yet to yield much. One tool it hopes will eventually change that: Small, square barcodes, like the one at the right, at the bottom of print ads. When a person scans the barcode with a compatible camera phone, it takes their phone’s browser to a mobile Web address encrypted in the graphic.

    Samir Satam says,

Aren’t these just QR Codes, that Japan’s been using since god knows when? probably the beginning of time….

Since GOOG doesnt really do anything unless they can tie it back to ad revenue, i would think biggest hurdle would be bandwidth on our cellular networks (or the lack of it). So now i just have to scan this QR Code into my celly and wait, oh… say 10 minutes till url loads that tells me indian restaurant in Cambridge.

Though it does tie nicely into the fact that they are bidding for 700Mz wireless spectrum… Oh GOOG, what are you upto now? Yes that is wild wild wild speculation.

I would love to know what your thoughts are.
